Type 4

The artist, the dreamer

Belle (La Belle et la Bête)
Éponine (Les Misérables)
Dracula (Bram Stoker's Dracula)

4s are attracted by authenticity, originality, individuality and artistic expression. They are often sensitive, expressive, passionate and spiritual people who seek to make the world more beautiful. They have a deep emotional connection with their own inner world and others. They seek to understand themselves and others in a deep and authentic way. 4s are very sensitive to feelings of suffering, both at home and among others. They are also very imaginative, and when they come out of their dreams, their imaginary world, they can become real sources of inspiration. 4s feel most alive when they creatively express their uniqueness through their personal experiences and passionate feelings.

Avoidance compulsion

4s seek at all costs, and often unconsciously, to avoid banality. They do everything they can to avoid feeling rejected, insignificant, misunderstood and unauthentic. They often have deep fear of being unwanted apart from their difference and being emotionally abandoned.

Center of attention and motivation

The attention of 4s is mainly focused on the past, the future, which is difficult to obtain (they have a burning desire for the impossible) and what is missing. They focus on finding the meaning of things. They are very sensitive to nostalgic feelings.
4s are motivated by artistic expression, are attracted by originality, authenticity and seek to make the world more beautiful. They need to be recognized for their artistic sense and have a strong sense of individuality. They need to express their creativity to feel good.

Vice and defense mechanism

When they are under the influence of their compulsion (to avoid banality), 4s become envious. They compare themselves a lot to others and become envious when others seem to have what they lack: relationships, happiness, or recognition. Their defense mechanism is introjection. They internalize the painful feelings to protect themselves: They interpret the painful feelings provoked by the outside as if they came from within. By introjection, they sometimes "absorb" other people who are important to them, feeling that they are part of themselves. For example, a 4 is criticized by a close person, the 4 could introject him so as to interpret his critics as if they came from deep inside himself. 4 may tend to introject bad experiences, so they feel they can better handle them.

In harmony

When they are in harmony with themselves and manage their compulsion, 4s are expressive, introspective, empathic, compassionate, idealistic and passionate.
They are in confort when they can freely express the emotions that matter to them and when others accept them as they are. Then they tend towards their type of integration (type 1) and its positive traits are added to their behavior. So they become more rational, neat, objective, realistic and organized.

In imbalance

Under the influence of their compulsion, 4s can become more moody, emotionally unstable, capricious, melancholic and egocentric.
If the situation does not get better, they tend towards their type of disintegration (type 2) and its negative traits are added to their behavior. Thus they can become more reactionary, compulsive, hysterical and desperate.

The neighbor types of 4 are types 3 and 5. We call the type wing, the neighbor type which seems to have the most influence on the basic type.
4w3s are more extroverted, ambitious and dynamic, but can also be more image-conscious and elitist.
4w5s are more introverted, enigmatic and intellectual, but can also be more depressed and lonely.
